Discusses various analytical methods used in drug analysis in order to identify structure, purity and action, including gravimetric and titrimetric methods of analysis; theory of neutralization; titrations; precipitation titrimetry; complex-formation titrations; theory of molecular absorption spectroscopy; analytical separation by solvent extraction and an introduction to chromatographic methods.

The practical course is designed for the applications of various analytical methods to substances used in pharmacy and medicine.

Study of the basic and modern instrumental methods used in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical active and non-active chemicals in different dosage forms.  In addition to quality control analysis stated in the pharmacopoeias e.g. spectroscopy and chromatography.

81332  Pharmaceutical Instrumental Analysis Lab

Practical application of instrumental methods. In addition, training on the interpretation of instrumental analysis results and applications of these methods in the elucidation of their structures and concentration determination of the studied samples.

81341  Phytochemistry

Provides information on the importance of naturally occurring products from their chemical, pharmaceutical and therapeutic applications. Natural products are classified to: volatile oils, resins, balsams, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, saponins, phenolic and related compounds, coumarins and tannins. In addition, different naturally occurring secondary metabolites, originating from acetate and malonate pathway, and natural nitrogenous compounds and always will be covered

This course is a practical study of natural chemical groups such as flavonoids, glycosides, volatile, alkaloids and fixed oils, ways of their identification and evaluation according to pharmaceutical compendias. The course deals with their isolation and identification using chromatographic and spectroscopic methods.

81443  Phytochemical Analysis

Provides student with basic information on analytical and instrumental methodology in the plant sciences and their utilization in natural products investigations, in particular herbal drugs identification and evaluation. This encompasses methods and techniques relevant to the extraction, separation, purification, identification and evaluation (qualitative and quantitative) of natural products and their derived substances and metabolites. Topics related to analysis of plant-derived extracts and plant products used as food, pharmaceutical, and/or medicinal substances, where emphasis will be placed upon chemical, spectroscopic and chromatographic evaluation. Methods of analysis used to evaluate selected herbal drugs approved and included in herbal pharmacopoeias and official sources will be discussed.

Application of qualitative analysis of secondary metabolites using thin layer chromatography (TLC) and the isolation and identification of secondary metabolites from plant drugs, using chromatographic and spectroscopic methods (TLC, IR, UV).

Introduction to medicinal chemistry. Study of drug physicochemical properties, distribution, metabolism and excretion. In addition to structure activity relationships. Emphasis will be on preservatives, disinfectants, anti-fungal drugs and antibiotics.

Involves the physicochemical principles which controls the basic processes e.g. drug diffusion through membranes, the effect of temperature on solubility, factors affecting drug stability, improving drug solubility using different methods, distribution of drugs between two immiscible solvents and calculations of complex stability constants.

Introduction about pharmacy practice and routes of administration. Formulation and compounding of various pharmaceutical dosage forms (solutions, suspensions, emulsions, ointments, powders, suppositories, parenteral and ophthalmic products, oral unit dosage forms).  In addition to, calculation methodologies needed and  to produce any pharmaceutical preparation.

Introducing students to basic pharmaceutical dosage forms: liquid, semi-solid, and solid types. The lab sessions involve the basic principles of compounding, preparation skills, and basics underlying the selection of formulating ingredients, packaging, labeling and storage conditions for final selection of finished products.

Comprehensive survey of industrial processes used in the production of pharmaceuticals.  Transfer processes and unit operation with emphasis on subjects of pharmaceutical interests especially tabletting. Quality control, quality assurance and GMP regulations are covered. Internal design of the pharmaceutical plant will be discussed.

Cover the unit process operation (size reduction, mixing, granulation and tabletting) in addition to quality control and pre-formulation; suggesting formula for certain drug knowing its physiochemical properties, formulation and evaluation using proper instruments .

82423  Pharmaceutical Technology (2)

The principles and designs of liquid and semisolid dosage forms. Physicochemical factors, which influence their formulation, stability and large-scale manufacture will be discussed. Subjects like microencapsulation and packaging processes will be also covered.

82424  Pharmaceutical Technology (2) Lab

Application of different tablet coating (film coating and enteric coating). Evaluating the coating process and coated dosage forms. In addition to design and evaluation of sustained release matrix. Quality control of semisolid dosage forms will be addressed. The evaluation of micro encapsulation will be covered.

83101  Nutrition For Pharmacy

This course focuses on the fundamentals of nutrition science that covers the role of healthy eating on health and wellness, the dietary guidelines for healthy diet planning, the digestive tract, the principles of digestion, absorption, and metabolism of the energy yielding nutrients (proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates), as well as the essential role of water, vitamins and minerals in the body. The second part of the course will cover the principles of enteral and parenteral nutrition, and the interaction between diet and drug.

Topics covered in this course include: classification of statistical data and methods of presentation; collection, organization and analysis of data; sampling; techniques in hypothesis; correlation and analysis of variance; simple linear regression, medical and biological applications on all of the above.

83211  Biochemistry (1)

This course is designed to provide an understanding of the structure of the chemical components of living matter. The course will cover the four major classes of biological molecules: water, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. An emphasis will be on the chemical properties and three-dimensional structure of these molecules in relationship to their biological function. Principles of bioenergetics, the mechanisms of enzyme action, enzyme kinetics, and the control mechanisms which regulate enzymatic reactions will be discussed.

Biochemistry lab course covers the topics given in biochemistry theory course which include:

pH measurements, separation methods of biomolecules like: molecular exclusion chromatography, adsorption chromatography , spectrophotometric measurements , protein isolation and characterization techniques, DNA extraction, carbohydrate characterization , use of DNA in recombinant DNA technology like PCR , in addition to many specific clinical tests to plasma proteins such as bilirubin test, cholesterol test and uric acid test.

Physical and microscopical examinations of some medicinal plants and identification of them and of their components using chromatographic and compendial qualitative and quantitative analysis.

In this course the students will be trained on research methods including data analysis, types of research, graphic presentations and research ethics.

Students in this course are asked to perform a research in certain branch of pharmaceutical sciences.

A number of specialized instruments including GC-MS, FT-IR, HPLC are available for the use in teaching and student research.

Students will be taught how to write a research paper effectively.

The course will be designed such that faculty members will participate in supervising the students while doing their research projects. Emphasis will be made on the use of computer in data analysis and statistical methods and their interpretation using computerized statistical software.

The aim of this course is to improve the knowledge of students about Pharmaceutical Excipients that are involved in the manufacturing of dosage forms, cosmetics and food. The adverse effects, toxicity and daily intake of these excipients are also discussed.

Brief discussion of radioactivity of certain pharmacologically active compounds. This course covers:

the use of radioisotopes in medicine and pharmacy, and precautions required in handling and storage of these radioisotopes.

This course clarifies the different methods of sterilization and focuses on the new steps that must be followed in order to prepare sterile products according to the new international standards.

Discusses the fundamentals of the skills and rules concerned with pharmacy practice in both hospital and community pharmacies. This course covers: dealing with the prescription, use and misuse of drugs, patient compliance, concordance, and services for vulnerable patients. In addition to communication skills required for pharmacy practice and the role of the pharmacist in giving advice and information.

84377  Ethics of Medical Profession

This course, as the title suggests, emphasizes the ethical principle upon which the medical professions and pharmacy in particular rest. The course looks at the nature and place of pharmaceutical services in society, and moral standards and professionalism expected from a pharmacist.

This course is designed to explore the proper use of antimicrobials to treat infectious diseases. Infections of different organ system will be covered including: respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, CNS, skin, wound infections, fungal infections, tuberculosis, sepsis and AIDS.

This course focuses mainly of the effect produced by poisons on the environment (humans, animals, plants, soil, water,….etc). It includes detailed studying of groups of environmental pollutants, the need to further research and investigation in this area, bioaccumulation, the effect of poisons on all levels of the universe, and the methods and pathways leading to contamination and the methods of calculating or estimating them.

This course aims to provide pharmacy students with the necessary knowledge, of all aspects of the veterinary drugs. The course covers the mechanism of action of veterinary medicines, their kinetics, drugs’ withdrawal time, their toxicity and adverse affects on human. Dosage forms and doses of these drugs will also be covered.

This course deals with different aspects of alternative medicine, such as a acupuncture, traditional homeopathy, herbalism, yoga, boiged back medication and others.

84455  Pharmaceutical Care

This course emphasizes on drug therapy assessment, creating a pharmacy care plan, monitoring the care plan, and communicating recommendations in an inpatient setting. Introductory clinical experience and patient case presentations utilize the drug information and patient monitoring skills learned earlier.

84457  Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation

This course covers several aspects including the physiological changes during pregnancy, the pharmacokinetics of medication in pregnancy, medication secreted in breast milk, utilization of medications during pregnancy, for several diseases such as upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, gastrointestinal disease, pain, infections, diabetes, hypertension, acne, and dental problems. It also covers the use of complementary and alternative medicine during pregnancy and lactation.
