Course Description

71102     History & Scope of Nursing

This introductory course is designed to provide the student nurse with the initial knowledge about nursing history, education needed, career opportunities, nursing practice & its standards, the characteristics of nursing and the roles of nurses.

Conceptual framework & nursing theories, practice models will be discussed briefly.  Nursing will be compared to other professions, which will aid the student in understanding where nursing stands. Health care delivery system and information about the application of each to nursing practice will be presented

71105     Anatomy & Physiology Ι.

This course is designed to provide a basic knowledge about the structures & functions of the human body, starting from the cell& all chemicals within the cell, & goes through body structures that make up various body systems.

It provides a brief overview of the interrelationship between the body systems & puts emphasis on the body homeostasis & the control systems that maintain it. It’s continued by anatomy & physiology ΙΙ.

71205     Anatomy & Physiology 2

Four hours introductory course in human anatomy and physiology, designed as a continuation course for anatomy and physiology 1, to cover the rest of the body structures, & systems, their function relationship with each other. Including the study of the endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems

71108     Fundamentals of Physical Evaluation Theory

This course is designed to provide the nursing students with essential knowledge and attitudes necessary to perform a comprehensive health assessment utilizing the skills of interviewing and history taking as well as skills in physical examination and psychosocial assessment, using inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation methods. Normal assessment findings, frequently seen variations from normal and cultural differences are discussed.

Also this course introduces the student to the communication and interpersonal relation skills to prepare him/her to become effective member of collaborative health care team. Critical thinking and decision making will be emphasized as a guide for safe, competent and skillful nursing practice.

71110     Infection Control Nursing Theory

Infections are a major safety and health hazard. Some infections are minor and cause short illnesses. Others are serious and can cause death. Infections can be especially serious for vulnerable infants and older persons. Caregivers and medical professionals have an important role in protecting patients, residents, visitors and themselves from infection.

The general objective of this course is to provide nursing students and health care workers with the tools to enable them to implement the infection control program effectively in order to protect themselves and others from the transmission of infections

71104      Fundamentals of Nursing I. Theory

This course is designed to provide the nursing student with essential knowledge & attitudes related to the basic Physiological & Psycho-social human needs & their alterations organized according to the functional health patterns.

Also this course introduces the student to the communication & interpersonal relation skills to prepare him/her to become effective members of a collaborative health care team. Critical thinking and decision making will be emphasized as a guide for a safe, competent & skillful nursing practice.

71114     Fundamentals of Nursing I clinical

This clinical course is designed to provide the nursing student with supervised & guided laboratory experiences with emphasis on the student’s independent learning that will assist him/her to master the basic nursing skills.

These skills are presented according to the functional health patterns that are in parallel with the knowledge provided for the student in the theory course, in order to prepare the student to implement holistic care in clinical settings for client, throughout the life span

71230     Fundamentals of Nursing II Theory   

This is a complementary course designed to provide the nursing student with the basic essential knowledge that assist him/her to understand holistic care modalities & therefore, plan & implement nursing strategies to meet the client's needs in a variety of clinical settings using the nursing process as a framework

71231      Fundamentals of Nursing II Clinical

This is a complementary course designed to provide the student nurse with the laboratory & clinical settings experiences in order to prepare him/her to implement holistic care modalities in the clinical settings for client throughout the life span

71206     Medical Surgical Nursing Ι. Theory

The course focuses on the bio-psychosocial response of clients to actual; and high-risk conditions that affect their functional health patterns; these conditions may be acute or long term. Altered physiology, diagnostic & treatment modalities will be discussed.

The nursing process will be used as frameworks to formulate nursing diagnosis, identify nursing outcome & nursing interventions directed towards preventing, promoting, maintaining & restoring the health of clients & their families.

71215      Medical Surgical Nursing Ι. Clinical

This course will focus on the bio-psycho-social responses of adults to actual and potential conditions that affect their functional health patterns. Clinical practice will provide an opportunity for the student to care for clients with alterations in functional health patterns in a variety of clinical settings utilizing the nursing process. They will be able to develop clinical decision-making skills and incorporate theory into practice process.

71207      Pharmacology for Nursing I

This course is designed to provide basic, authoritative and current principles of pharmacology tuition for nurses.

This course will emphasize on drug groups and prototypes rather than repetitive detail about individual drugs. It will give an up- to date account of the actions and uses of drugs in the treatment or disease, and enables the student to understand the principles involved as well as providing information so they will be able to play their full part in patient care.

71302     Medical- Surgical nursing II, Theory

This is a continuation course for medical surgical 1 focuses on the bio-psycho-social responses of client to a selected disorders, gastrointestinal tract , urinary tract, muskelo–skeletal, dermatology and immunologic function. The nursing process will be used as a framework to formulate and provide the care for the patients and their families

71303      Medical- Surgical nursing II, Clinical

This course is a continuation for medical surgical theory 71312 which will focus on the biopsycho-social responses of adults to actual and potential conditions that affect their functional health patterns. Clinical practice will provide an opportunity for the student to care for clients with alterations in functional health patterns in a variety of clinical settings utilizing the nursing process. They will be able to develop clinical decision-making skills and incorporate theory into practice process. 71208      Pharmacology for Nursing II

This course is designed to provide the nursing students with essential knowledge regarding different medications. This course will be complementary to part one of pharmacology for Nursing. It will cover the groups of drugs acting on the various body systems. Also, it will focus on the role of nursing staff in dealing with different types of therapeutic agents. It will emphasize on drug groups and prototypes. It will give an up- to date account of the actions and uses of drugs in the treatment of disease

71304      Elderly and Rehabilitation Nursing Theory

This is two credit theoretical hours aims to introduce nursing students to theories and concepts of aging and to provide an important information on how to take care of the older adult. Also to pinpoint the major changes associated with this process, i.e. physiological and psychosocial, then decide the appropriate nursing interventions accordingly. Also at this course, the nursing student will be introduced to the major theories, myths, and social roles. Ethical and legal aspects of caring for the elderly are also addressed in light of universal and Palestinian context

71314     Elderly and Rehabilitation Nursing clinical  

This course is developed to help the student nurse to consider the total health of elder and disabled people. The physical, mental, emotional, sociocultural, and religious-moral needs are interrelated. This course is designed as 2 credit hours for the undergraduate Nursing students. This course will be complemented with another theoretical course. In this course special skills will be taught. The students will do the practice in different community clinics, health centers, and other settings in different areas on Palestine

71305       Maternity & Gynecology Nursing Theory

Maternity nursing course will focus on the well-being of the women and infant during child bearing period, it provide student with knowledge, experience, and skills needed to become competent care provider and understand the process of pregnancy, reproductive cycle, physiology and physiological changes in pregnancy and post-delivery, normal and abnormal labor, high risk pregnancy and postpartum, and appropriate implementation of nursing care to meet these needs and attempts is made to coordinate the antenatal, intra-partum and post natal theory with experiences in the respective areas.

71316      Maternity & Gynecology Nursing Clinical

This course focuses on women's and family health including reproductive and maternity health caring, gynecological and family planning skills also emphasize on teaching, training and practice related to maternal roles during of childbearing and child rearing cycles.

Students will get experience in assessing maternal and fetal well-being, managing pain, labor coaching, and immediate postpartum care. Also they will learn about selected aspects of reproductive health including sexual transmitted infections, family planning, and menopause.

The role of nursing in the promotion, maintenance and restoration of women health will be emphasized. Scientific challenges, legal issues, research findings, socio-cultural differences and implications, and ethical issues important to nursing practice in the field of maternity/women's health will be also examined through using nursing management and nursing process.

71320      Pediatric Nursing Theory

These five credits hours‟ course is designed to provide the pediatric Nursing student with the basic knowledge about the health promotion & health maintenance of children & their families. It is concerned with fostering optimum health of children & their families through anticipatory guidance regarding nutrition, prevention of diseases, injuries & promotion of parent child attachment.

It discusses the social, cultural, religious & familial influences on the child & family health promotion. The course will provide the basic view of the normal norms & alteration that take place during growth & development of the child in different developmental stages; children are presented as a unique individual on a life - long developmental continuum.

The major emphasis is on the nurses role in dealing with children & families with various health problems, in different age groups, nursing process is used to guide the care provided for children and their families.

71321      Pediatric Nursing Clinical

Three credit hours course is designed to provide guided clinical training experience, knowledge, skills required for the basic preparation of the third year nursing students in the nursing care of newborns, infants, children, and Adolescents, with general, specific, and complex health problems.

It also aims at utilizing primary health concepts in offering the care of such population. The nursing process will be utilized in implementing the plan of care. In addition, the course is devoted to the promotion of health and prevention of diseases in children.

71403     Community Health Nursing, Theory

Community health nursing is synthesis of nursing and public health practice, with the goal of health promotion, and preserving the health of population. It is well known that the need for increasing quality of health care in the world for individual, families, and communities has been increased; community health nursing became an important aspect in the nursing specialty. So, this course is designed as 3 credit hours for the undergraduate Nursing students. This course will be complemented with another clinical course. In this course, special skills will be taught include; assessment and analysis of community health problems and concerns, assessment of school health and application of health promotion and health education, promoting physical and mental health as well as preventing disease, injury, and disability in the Palestinian community

71411     Community Health Nursing, Clinical

Community health nursing is synthesis of nursing and public health practice, with the goal of health promotion, and preserving the health of population. It is well known that the need for increasing quality of health care in the world for individual, families, and communities has been increased; community health nursing becomes an important aspect in the nursing specialty. So, this course is designed as a 3 credit hours practice for the undergraduate Nursing students.

This course will be complemented with another theoretical course. In this course special community care related skills will be taught as the students will do the practice in different community clinics, health centers, schools and other settings in different areas on Palestine.  The students will be asked to do assessment and analysis of community health problem/s, assessment of school health program and application of health promotion and health education activities, promoting physical and mental health as well as preventing disease, injury, and disability strategies in our community.

71221     Health promotion and therapeutic communication

This course is developed to help the student nurse to consider the total health of the person, family and community by connecting the physical, mental, socio-cultural, and religious-moral needs. The course emphasizes on comprehensive health promotion rather than on patchwork remedies.

The course also centers on communication approaches and techniques relevant to the provision of nursing care to individual(s) and groups. The course is designed to help the student nurse to explore and examine the basic knowledge and skills of communication in health/illness context; sorts of therapeutic skills, and building new experiences that will help the student to develop a goal-directed relationship that will introduce change in self and others and to help reach a high level of wellness. It also includes health education as an integral part of nurse-client interaction

71203     Nutrition for Nursing

Food and Nutrition are every ones concern and it is especially so, for the sick. That is why the nurse and other health care professionals who are in direct contact with patients should know about nutritional science and its applications.

This course is designed to provide good knowledge about nutrition basics; the nutrients, their sources, importance, requirements, digestion, absorption and metabolism.

Applied Nutrition in community health is an important part of this course. It focuses on the factors affecting the community, the nutritional status such as food habits, personal, belief and sand food safety. Nutrition is a vital element that affects the health of humans throughout their life cycle. This section will discuss in detail the dietary guidelines of pregnant and lactating women, nutrition in infancy, pre- and school stage adolescents, adults and elderly.

Because nutrition and diet therapy for many acute and chronic diseases is a vital element in prevention and treatment. One major part of the course will be to provide the knowledge about what is now called, Medical Nutrition Therapy for Diseases.

This includes diabetes, kidney diseases, liver diseases, gastrointestinal cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. The course will discuss the nutritional support for hospitalized patients (enteral and parenteral nutrition).

71405     Nursing Administration Theory

This course is designed to introduce the students to management and leadership concepts and principles necessary to promote student’s ability to manage care and make appropriate decision related to clients.

These concepts and principles are also necessary to facilitate student’s growth as future nurse leader able to affect quality of care and introduce change when necessary, so Management Process is used as a framework in designing the content of the course

71415     Nursing Administration Clinical

This course is complementary to the administration and organization in nursing theory course.  It gives the student the opportunity to integrate various management and leadership concepts and principles into practical experiences organized in different settings.  Students are required to submit individual and group projects that reflect mastering levels of different management and leadership concepts and skills

71408      Methods of Health Research

This course is designed to help the nursing student to develop a scientific knowledge base and facilitate the growth of the nursing profession. The course will introduce the basic concepts of research, its nature, purpose, and methods that help the student to conduct future studies and implement research study findings in clinical & community settings

71332     Biostatistics for Nursing

This course introduces the basic principles and methods of biostatistics. Emphasis is on fundamental concepts of data and techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics with applications in nursing, health care, medicine, public health, and epidemiology. Basic statistics, including probability, descriptive statistics, inferences for means and proportions are presented

71406     Nursing Seminar

The course is designed to enable student identify current trends & issues in nursing, health care & nursing education & practice. Emphasis is placed on the development of professional values, critical thinking, decision making, and communication skills. A selection of topics on current issues and trends will be offered, each will focus on a particular theme related to nursing practice. In-depth knowledge is derived through literature review and interaction with members of the health team. The supervisor will provide student the opportunity to explore issues that affects nursing practice, but will not mandate the particular topics to be covered, student will be encouraged to work independently and cooperate as a group member.

71209     Nursing Ethics

The course focuses on ethical considerations in the profession as well as professional issues relevant to the practice of nursing for the professional nurse and for the nursing profession. The course is designed to stimulate nursing students for critical thinking when discussing ethical and legal principles in general, and issues related to Palestinian community in specific.

This course focuses on ethical issues in the daily work of professional nurse in relation to general nursing care. The course introduces students to theories principles and ethical legal issues in general and discusses it in relation to Palestinian context in specific. As the students where graduated and they have experience in clinical practice, they supposed to be active participants in the discussion, and enrich these discussions with valuable information from their clinical experience.

71420      Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing Theory

This course is a comprehensive one that is mainly designed to provide the student with the body of knowledge of various medical, and surgical health related diseases. Special consideration and emphasize will be placed upon the introduction of critical care nursing concepts by the utilization of the nursing process module. This course focuses on proper and fast nursing assessment in order to implement effective nursing interventions for critically ill patients and to prevent additional injury. This course provides nursing practice opportunities in health promotion, restoration and support for patients in critical care units. Farther emphasize will be placed on the psychological, pathophysiological, and socio-spiritual needs and problems of critically ill, and medical surgical patients and their families

71414     Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing Clinical

This course will focus on the bio-psycho-social responses of clients to actual & potential conditions that affect their functional health patterns. Clinical practice will provide an opportunity for the student to care for adults with alternations in functional health patterns in a variety of critical clinical setting utilizing the nursing process. They will be able to develop advanced clinical decision –making skills & incorporate theory into practice process
