Hebron University Journal - Hebron University Journal for Research - Volume 12, 2023 - Comparison between Different Anticoagulants such as Sodium Citrate, EDTA, and Lithium Heparin among Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate Test

Review

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate Test (ESR), is one of the major laboratory tests used in diagnostic labs. This study compares and determines the ESR results obtained when using various anticoagulants that might clearly affect the ESR values for both male and female. 100 whole blood samples were collected from the volunteers in Hebron during the time from February 2023 until March 2023. 10 cc of whole blood collected from participants was divided into five different anticoagulants containing tubes The results of the study revealed that there are differences in the ESR value upon each anticoagulant used. A variation between the ESR results values is shown in both male and female samples. Heparin and EDTA are anticoagulants which increase the ESR values in contrast to Sodium Citrate used in the standard method. The researchers concluded that Tri-Sodium Citrate is the best anticoagulant and diluent to be used in laboratories but not EDTA or Heparin.
