Chemistry is one of the oldest science known to mankind. This branch of science has developed through ages but witnesses huge progress in the last decades. This accelerated progress has revealed intersection between chemistry and other branches of science which in turn showed the huge impact of this branch of science on the daily life of human kind and its prosperity.
The chemistry department was established in 1987 to facilitate and provide teaching and training medium to high school graduate students welling to continue their university education in chemistry. This was the first chemistry department in the southern part of West Bank. This region is highly populated (about 600000 inhabitants) and the department, particularly, provides a nearby facility for females to obtain a B.Sc. degree in chemistry. In addition, the department serves other faculties, such as Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Education at the university by providing the necessary required courses. In the last few years, the department has expanded considerably by enlarging the number of students and in parallel the faculty members where the faculty members now are 8 Ph.D’s holder in different branches of chemistry and the student’s number has increased to 220 (85% are female). The graduated students from the department is more than 450, where among these a considerable number is now working at schools and others working in industry that is directly linked to chemistry. A number of talented graduated students from the department have obtained scholarships to continue their higher education at well recognized international universities. In addition to practical labs for students, the department has research lab equipped with a number of advanced instruments.
