Faculty Facilities and Laboratories

The College Laboratories:

Biology:

The Biology Department has three laboratories. There are two labs for teaching purposes, containing the necessary equipment to achieve the main goals of the experimental part of Biology courses. There is also a research lab where Department members perform research on epidemiology and biology data.

Research Lab Activities

The lab was established in 2002 as a result of a joint project between the Biology Department at Hebron University and the Medical College/ Institute of Preventive Medicine at the University of Oslo. The lab employs two research assistants, three assistants, and three graduate students (two PhD and one Master’s Degree student in epidemiology).

Main Ongoing Research

1. The effects of pesticides on farmers’ health

2. The effect of organic solvents on the respiratory systems of female hairdressers.

3. Stress among nurses

4. Toxoplasmosis among pregnant women and its effects on their their fetuses.

Chemistry:

The Chemistry Department has three laboratories. Two are used for teaching practical courses for students of chemistry and other departments in the University. The third laboratory is used for scientific research and is equipped with a number of instruments, such as as gas chromatography and fluorescence spectrometers given to the Department by several donors and through a number of joint projects. Previous and ongoing projects include research related to water and air pollution, and occupational hygiene and safety.

Radiation Pollution Lab

This lab contains two units:

* The first unit is equipped with many instruments used for the study of the concentration of certain elements like 238U-series ,232Th-series ,40K, 137Cs in environmental samples such as soil, plants ,water ,building material, foodstuffs , etc. Gamma spectral radiation is analyzed in order to measure the above element concentration and to calculate dose rate, radio equivalent activity, external and internal hazard index, and level index of the total natural radioactivity in the studied samples, and to study their effects on environmental and biological systems.

* The second unit houses a number of dosimeters, Cr-39 detectors, microscopes, etc, used for the study of  222Rn levels, radon exhalation rate and the annual effective dose equivalent in indoor and outdoor settings, in the air inside Palestinian buildings, and in soil, building materials , and water. Radon and daughter products contribute the largest fraction to the doses received from natural background radiation.

Computer Laboratories

The Department of Computer Science has five computer laboratories. All laboratories are open for teaching, research and development. These laboratories are equipped with desktop computers, laser printers, data shows, multimedia facilities, and other computer resources shared through local area network. These labs use Windows XP operating system and serve Department staff members, Department students and students from other Faculties at the University. Each lab has a resident supervisor, who is responsible for lab maintenance, serving teaching assistant during courses, and guiding students in their projects.

1. Database Lab

Lab Name: Database Lab

Lab Location: S208- Faculty of Science and Technology- 2nd floor.

Lab Supervisor: Mr. Milhem Nabil Milhem, B.Sc., Computer Science

This lab contains 25 HP Pentium 4 workstations, laser printer, datashow, and other resources shared through a local area network. This lab is used by students during courses to simulate real-life problems using software available in the lab, such as C, C++, VBNET, Java, SPSS, Photoshop, Matlab, Oracle, Access, etc. Students use this lab to develop their abilities and skills in the field of database systems.

2. Multimedia Lab

Lab Name: Multimedia Lab

Lab Location: S408- Faculty of Science and Technology- 4th floor.

Lab Supervisor: Ms Zohoor Abu Queder, B.Sc., Computer Science

This lab contains 25 Pentium 4 workstations, laser printer, datashow, multimedia facilities and other computer resources shared through a local area network. This lab is used for teaching multimedia courses and serves graduate students projects (multimedia projects). The lab also provides services to many Faculties and Department in the University such as the Faculty of Management, the Department of Media, and the Department of Biology by teaching many courses such as: Computer Science II for management students and computer and World Wide Web information for media students. An internet connection is also available for students use in this lab.

3. Computer Applications Lab

Lab Name: Computer Applications Lab

Lab Location: M208- Faculty of  Alshareea- 2nd floor.

Lab Supervisor: Mr. Salah Temeiza, B.Sc., Computer Science

This lab contains 40 Pentium 4 workstations, laser printer, datashow, and other computer resources shared through a local area network. This lab is used for teaching computer applications course, which serves all students in the University. The computer applications course is a compulsory course for all students in the University and each semester more than 15 sessions with 35 students each are enrolled in this course. An internet connection is also available for students use in this lab.
