Introduction:

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. Its budget of €14.7 billion will provide opportunities for over 4 million Europeans to study, train, gain experience, and volunteer abroad.

Set to last until 2020, Erasmus+ doesn't just have opportunities for students. Merging seven prior programmes, it has opportunities for a wide variety of individuals and organisations.

The aim of Erasmus+ is to contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy for growth, jobs, social equity and inclusion, as well as the aims of ET2020, the EU's strategic framework for education and training.

Erasmus+ also aims to promote the sustainable development of its partners in the field of higher education, and contribute to achieving the objectives of the EU Youth Strategy.

Specific issues tackled by the programme include:

  • Reducing unemployment, especially among young people
  • Promoting adult learning, especially for new skills and skills required by the labour market.
  • Encouraging young people to take part in European democracy
  • Supporting innovation, cooperation and reform
  • Reducing early school leaving
  • Promoting cooperation and mobility with the EU's partner countries
  • Please see the link for more details: http://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/about_en

The Erasmus Programme (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is a European Union (EU) Student Exchange Programme that offers opportunities for cooperation across the Education, Training and Youth sectors.

Key Actions are:

  • International Credit Mobility Key Action 1 (ICM KA1):

Erasmus+ offers opportunities for students to study and staff to teach or train in higher education institutions (HEIs) within and beyond Europe. It also makes the same opportunities available for staff and students from countries beyond Europe to come to participating HEIs in Europe. This is known as International Credit Mobility and is an activity under Key Action 1 Mobility.

  •  Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD):

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMDs) are international Master study programmes delivered by a consortium of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from different countries and where relevant other partners with specific expertise and interest in the study programme.

  • Capacity Building for Higher Education Key Action 2 (CBHE KA2):

The actions under KA2 make it possible for organisations from different participating countries to work together, to develop, share and transfer best practices and innovative approaches in the fields of education, training and youth.

  • Jean Monnet - Activities:

Jean Monnet Activities are designed to promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union studies worldwide. The activities also foster the dialogue between the academic world and policy-makers, in particular with the aim of enhancing governance of EU policies.

European Union studies comprise the study of Europe in its entirety with particular emphasis on the European integration process in both its internal and external aspects. The discipline also covers the role of the EU in a globalised world and in promoting an active European citizenship and dialogue between people and cultures.
