Note for nursing student:

After passing all academic courses, the student has to complete a 300 hours of practice at hospitals and health institutions (internship); students are supervised by faculty members.

 

Comprehensive exam:

All the students who passed all the previous requirement have to set for a comprehensive exam include all the specialty courses. In case of failing the exam, student can retake the exam within a month and do 100 hours of clinical practice. If the student failed for the second time he/she has to repeat it after 6 months

·        The student  has to pay 10 J.D as a fee for the exam

 

·        60% is the passing grade for the following requirements:

·        Compulsory university requirements

·        Elective university requirements

·        Compulsory faculty requirements from science, Art, and Education faculties

·        70% is the passing grade for faculty specialty courses

·        If the student failed to remove the second academic probation he/she will be dismissed from the university.

The student has to pass the prerequisite course before registering for the following course.

 

 

Core-course description at the nursing faculty:

70101 History & Scope of Nursing, 2 hours

This introductory course is designed to provide the student nurse with the initial knowledge about the history of nursing, educational requirements, career opportunities, nursing practice & its standards, the characteristics of nursing and the roles of nurses. Conceptual framework & nursing theories, practice models will be discussed briefly. Nursing will be compared to other professions which will aid the student in understanding where nursing stands. Health care delivery systems and information about the application of each to nursing practice will be presented.

70103 Anatomy & Physiology I, 4 hours

This course is deigned to provide a basic knowledge about the structures & functions of the human body, starting from the cell& all chemicals within the cell, & goes through body structures and various body systems. It provides a brief overview of the interrelationship between the body systems. It puts emphasis on the body homeostasis & the control systems that maintain it. It is followed by Anatomy and Physiology II. (Prerequisite 44103)

70104 Fundamentals of Nursing I Theory, 4 hours

This course is designed to provide the nursing student with essential knowledge & attitudes related to the basic Physiological & Psycho-social human needs & their alterations organized according to the functional health patterns. Also this course introduces the student to the communication & interpersonal relation skills to prepare him/her to become effective members of a collaborative health care team. Critical thinking and decision-making will be emphasized as a guide for safe, competent and skilful nursing practice. (Prerequisite 44103)

70114 Fundamentals of Nursing I /Clinical, 3 hours

This clinical course is designed to provide the nursing student with supervised & guided laboratory experiences with emphasis on the student’s independent learning that will assist him/her to master the basic nursing skills. These skills are presented according to the functional health patterns that are in parallel with the knowledge provided for the student in the theory course in order to prepare him/ her to implement holistic care in clinical settings for client, throughout the lifespan.

70201 Mental Health, 2 hours

This course is designed to introduce the students to mental health concepts, principles of behavioral and emotional deviations and techniques that are basic to the practice of nursing mental care. It explores human behaviors depending on theoretical views and binds these theories with actual assessment of clients. Students will be able to understand and detect the abnormalities which will improve their role in the counseling process. It emphasizes the acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills required in the delivery of quality nursing care for clients in the hospital and the community in a holistic view about normal development of people regarding the aspects that lead to healthy and positive personality that can cope with our daily life stresses. (Prerequisite 31100) 

70202 Anatomy & Physiology II, 4 hours

This course is designed as a continuation course for anatomy and physiology I,  to cover the rest of the body structures, organs & systems and  their relationship with each other. (Prerequisite 70103) 

 

70204 Fundamentals of Nursing II / Theory, 4 hours

This is a complementary course designed to provide the nursing student with the basic essential knowledge that assists him/her to understand holistic care modalities & therefore  plan & implement nursing strategies to meet the client’s needs in a variety of clinical settings using the nursing process as a framework.  (Prerequisite 70104 +70103)

70206 Medical-Surgical Nursing I / Theory, 4 hours

The course focuses on the bio-psychosocial responses of clients to actual and high-risk conditions that affect their functional health patterns - these conditions may be acute or long-term. Altered physiology, diagnostic & treatment modalities will be discussed.

The nursing process will be used as a framework to formulate nursing diagnosis, identify nursing outcomes & nursing interventions directed towards preventing, promoting, maintaining & restoring the health of clients & their families.  (Prerequisite 70204)

70207 Pharmacology for Nursing I, 2 hours

This course is designed to provide basic, authoritative and current principles of pharmacology for nurses. There will be an emphasis on drug groups and prototypes rather than repetitive detail about individual drugs. It will give an up- to- date account of the actions and uses of drugs in the treatment of disease, and enables nurses to understand the principles involved as well as providing factual information so they will be able to play their full part in patient care. The responsibilities of nurses in administering of pharmacological agents will be stressed. The body of each subject contains the action, uses, adverse reactions, and drug interactions of the class or type of drug being discussed followed by specific nursing management considerations and a section devoted to the nursing process.

70208 Pharmacology for Nursing II, 2 hours

This course is complementary to Pharmacology I. It covers the groups of drugs that act on the rest of the various body systems. The body of each subject contains the action, uses, adverse reactions, and drug interactions of the class or type of drug being discussed followed by specific nursing management considerations and a section devoted to the nursing process.  (Prerequisite 70207)

70209 Nursing Ethics, 2 hours

The course focuses on ethical considerations in the profession as well as professional issues relevant to the practice of nursing for the professional nurse and for the nursing profession. The course is designed to stimulate nursing students for critical thinking when discussing ethical and legal principles in general, and issues related to the Palestinian community in specific. This course focuses on ethical issues in the daily work of professional nurses in relation to general nursing care. The course introduces students to theories- principles and ethical legal issues in general and discusses it in relation to the Palestinian context.

70214 Fundamentals Of Nursing II / Clinical, 3 hours

This is a complementary course designed to provide the student nurse with the laboratory & clinical settings experiences in order to prepare him/her to implement holistic care modalities in the clinical settings for client throughout the life span. (Prerequisite 70114+70104) 

70216 Medical-Surgical Nursing I / Clinical, 3 hours

This course focuses on the bio-psycho-social responses of adults to actual and potential conditions that affect their functional health patterns. Clinical practice will provide an opportunity for the student to care for clients with alterations in functional health patterns in a variety of clinical settings utilizing the nursing process. They will be able to develop clinical decision-making skills and incorporate theory into practice. (Prerequisite 70214) 

70302 Medical-Surgical Nursing II / Theory, 4 hours

This is a complementary course which focuses on the bio-psycho-social responses of client to selected disorders. The nursing process will be used as a framework to formulate & provide the care for the clients and their families. (Prerequisite 70206) 

70304 Elderly & Rehabilitation Nursing / Theory, 2 hours

This course is developed to help the student nurse to consider the total health of the elderly and disabled people. The physical, mental, emotional, socio-cultural and religious-moral needs are interrelated. This course will be complemented with a clinical course. In this course special skills will be taught including assessment and analysis of community health problems and concerns. 

70305 Maternity & Gynecology Nursing / Theory, 4 hours

This course focuses on the study of women during different cycles of childbearing & childrearing periods. There is a focus on family planning & the diseases of female reproductive system from puberty until the postmenopausal period.  Demonstration of knowledge, attitude, & skills related to physical & psychological concepts relevant to the health care of childbearing family. The application of nursing process in the assessment & management of family inducing counseling strategies & hazards that might face the mother & family during childbearing period.

70402 Research Methods in Nursing, 2 hours

This course is designed to help the nursing student to develop a scientific knowledge base and facilitate the growth of the nursing profession. This course aims to introduce the basic concepts of research, its nature, purpose, methods that help the student to conduct future studies and implement research study findings in clinical & community settings. (Prerequisite 41331)  

70401 Psychiatric Nursing / Theory, 3 hours

This course is designed for the beginner student in psychiatric nursing. The course is based on a belief in the value of humanistic and holistic approaches to nursing care. The nursing process is used as an organizing framework. It provides student with concepts, theories and principles that will illuminate his/her clinical experience. Each concept represents a major coping pattern along the mental health-mental illness continuum and is addressed through its relation to the anxiety continuum, theoretical basis, its manifestation with the five dimensions of the person, related nursing diagnosis, psychiatric diagnosis, and nursing care plans. (Prerequisite 31100 + 70201) 

70309 Health Promotion & Therapeutic Communication, 2 hours

The course is designed to help the student nurse to explore and examine basic knowledge and skills of communication in health and illness context; building new experiences, meaning and therapeutic skills; that will help the student to develop a goal-directed relationship that will introduce change in self and others in the environment, to reach a high level of wellness. It also includes teaching as integral part of nurse-client interaction. (Prerequisite none) 

 

70312 Medical-Surgical Nursing II / Clinical, 3 hours

This course is a continuation of medical surgical I / clinical, which will focus on the bio-psycho-social responses of adults to actual and potential conditions that affect their functional health patterns. Clinical practice will provide an opportunity for the student to care for clients with alterations in functional health patterns in a variety of clinical settings utilizing the nursing process. They will be able to develop clinical decision-making skills and incorporate theory into practice process. (Prerequisite 70216) 

70314 Elderly & Rehabilitation Nursing / Clinical, 2 hours

This course is developed to help the student nurse to consider the total health of elderly and disabled people. The physical, mental, emotional, socio-cultural, and religious-moral needs are interrelated. In this course special skills will be taught. The students will practice in different community clinics, health centers, and hospitals.  (Prerequisite none) 

70305 Maternity & Gynecology Nursing / Clinical, 3 hours

This course emphasizes teaching, training & practicing skills related to the maternal roles during different cycles of childbearing & child rearing stages; practice gynecological procedures & skills related to family planning & gynecology. The focus of nursing management is on primary health maintenance & restoration of health by using the nursing process.

70411 Psychiatric Nursing / Clinical, 2 hours

This course is designed to help the student nurse explore and gain insight into the problems experienced by the mentally ill person- the emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual strains. The student is expected to integrate a knowledge base from the mental health psychiatric nursing theory course, utilize the nursing process within the therapeutic nurse client relationship with the emphasis on the humanistic holistic approach, and develop an open communication with health care providers' team to facilitate the clients' health process in structured environment. (Prerequisite none) 

70307 Pediatric Nursing Theory, 5 hours

This course is designed to provide the pediatric nursing student with the basic knowledge about the health promotion & health maintenance of children & their families. It is concerned with fostering optimum health through anticipatory guidance regarding nutrition, prevention of disease injury & promotion of parent-child attachment. It discusses the social, cultural, religious & familial influences on the child & family health promotion. The course will provide the basic views of the alteration that take place during growth & development.  Children are presented as a unique individual on a life - long developmental continuum. The major emphasis is on the nurse’s role in dealing with children & families with various health problems, in different age groups. The nursing process is used to guide the care provided for children and their families. (Prerequisite none) 

70406 Nursing Seminar 2 hours

The current trends & issues in nursing, health care & nursing education & practice will be addressed in this course. Seminars will provide student with the opportunity to analyze, discuss and elaborate on concepts related to the nursing profession. There will be an emphasis on the role of the professional nurse in our society as a leader and as an agent of change in relation to the concepts discussed. (Prerequisite 70402) 

70403 Community Health Nursing / Theory 3 hours

Community health nursing is a synthesis of nursing and public health practice, with the goal of health promoting and preserving the health of population. It is well known that the need for increasing quality of health care in the world for individual, families, and communities has been increased; community health nursing became an important aspect in the nursing specialty. This course will be complemented with another clinical course. In this course special skills will be taught including ; assessment and analysis of community health problems and concerns, assessment of school health and application of health promotion and health education, promoting physical and mental health as well as preventing disease, injury, and disability in our community. (Prerequisite none) 

70404 Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing / Theory, 4 hours

This course is a comprehensive one that is mainly designed to provide the student with the body of knowledge of various medical and surgically related diseases. Special consideration and emphasis will be placed upon the introduction of critical care nursing concepts by the utilization of the nursing process module. This course focuses on  a proper and fast nursing assessment in order to implement effective nursing interventions for critically ill patients and to prevent additional injury. This course provides nursing practice opportunities in health promotion, restoration and support for patients in critical care units. Further emphasis will be placed on the psychological, pathophysiological, and socio-spiritual needs and problems of critically ill, medical surgical patients and their families. (Prerequisite 70302) 

70405 Nursing Administration / Theory, 3 hours

This course is designed to introduce the student to management & leadership concepts & principles necessary to promote a student’s ability to manage care and make appropriate decisions related to clients. These concepts & principles are also necessary to facilitate student’s growth as future nurse leaders and their ability to affect quality of care & introduce change when necessary. Management process used as a framework in designing the content of the course.

70307 Pediatric Nursing / Clinical 3 hours

This course aims at providing guided clinical training experience, knowledge, skills required for the basic preparation of the fourth year nursing students in the nursing care of newborns, infants, children, and adolescents with general, specific, and complex health problems. It also aims at utilizing primary health concepts in offering care to this population. The nursing process will be utilized in implementing the plan of care. In addition, the course is devoted to the promotion of health and prevention of diseases in children.

70413 Community Health Nursing / Clinical 3 hours

This practical course runs concurrently with the theoretical course (70403). In this course special skills will be taught. The students will practice in different community clinics, health centers, schools and other settings in Palestine. The students will be asked to do assessments and analysis of community health problem/s, assessment of school health program and application of health promotion and health education activities, promoting physical and mental health as well as preventing disease, injury, and disability strategies in our community.

70414 Advanced Medical- Surgical Nursing / Clinical, 3 hours

This course will focus on the bio-psycho-social responses of clients to actual & potential conditions that affect their functional health patterns. Clinical practice will provide an opportunity for the student to care of adults with alternations in functional health patterns in a variety of critical clinical settings utilizing the nursing process. They will be able to develop advanced clinical decision –making skills & incorporate theory into practice process. (Prerequisite 70312) 

70415 Nursing Administration / Clinical, 2 hours

This course is complementary to the administration and organization in the nursing theory course (70405). It gives the student the opportunity to integrate various management and leadership concepts and principles into practical experiences organized in different settings. Students are required to submit individual and group projects that reflect mastering levels of different management and leadership concepts and skills. (Prerequisite none)
