My students usually notice right away that I repeat
myself a lot, and one thing I say often is "What do you
want to write about." I mean that college students on the
graduate and undergraduate levels have to find ways to
become more active learners, in order to meet their
professional and career responsibilities. For many,
that means learning better ways to learn, ways that I
hope will sustain life long mental, emotional and
spiritual growth.
As the dean of the College of Graduate
Studies, I believe that teaching styles need to
reflect the belief that higher education is a
distinctly cooperative effort between students and
faculty members that benefit the individual scholar, the
university, and the broad society in which all are
imbedded.
Probably what I ask the most is
"Where is the critical thinking?" for me that is the
primary lesson a university has to teach.
